Gnanam goes to college on 23 February 2010, Tuesday.

A good piece of news today.

Mr Loo (YB Elizabeth Wong’s P.A.) called Paul Wong at about 4.29pm to inform that he has made a remittance of RM3,900.00 to the bursar of Brickfields Asia College. Gnanam can therefore collect his books from Mr Aria (C.O.O.) anytime tomorrow.

Gnanam will be doing the Cambridge A-Levels on part-time basis, starting 23rd Feb., Tuesday.
,

He will be taking two papers, namely law and business studies.

Brickfields Asia College appears to be the ideal institution for learning law. (Apparently, the AG’s son was also a student here.)

The website offers alot of online rsource materials for the students; so with kind (financial) support from the public, perhaps we could look into getting a notebook with a broadband modem to take advantage of the online resources to complement his studies. The college lecturers and some of those who had been mentoring Gnanam will continue to monitor him. I suppose it would also work towards getting his off the streets and be committed to studies.

The educational path is a long one for Gnanam. Mr Aria (according to Loo) is confident of Gnanam’s commitment to study. The financial burden for seeing Gnanam succeed academically, is of concern. Perhaps when Gnanam completes his A-Levels and moves up the ladder to CLP, YB can give a recommendation letter for application of study loan, or some good samaritan can sponsor him. Juggling between working and studying, perhaps the public can look into some donations to ease the financial constraints that goes along over time.

Gnanam Scheduled for Feb 2010 Intake- Brickfields Asia College.

11 February 2010

Follow-up with Loo Chuan Boon (YB’s PA) – scheduled meeting today to collect tuition fees cheque.
Due to Chinese New Year break, Mr Sekarn will assist to enrol Gnanam next Wednesday (17/2/2010).

Followed up with Mr Baljit Singh (Brickfields Asia College Law Lecturer) – He has faxed to Paul Wong the A-Levels time-table for part-time study. The syllabus is obtainable at http://www.cie.org.uk

5 February 2010

Teleconversation between Paul Wong and Mr Baljit Singh of Brickfields Asia College – the part-time program is scheduled to start around 18 February (after Chinese New Year). Also liaised with Mr Loo on the payment of tuition fees soonest possible so that Gnanam can get the books and other study materials in preparation of his A-Levels program. Mr Loo will directly deal with the college on the tuition fees (& examination fees) totalling RM3,900 . We shall be meeting Gnanam sometime next week to see what he needs; actually we asked him to get back his father’s bike which is still in police custody. According to the mother, the police Station concerned misplaced the keys. Also he had no driving licence and we told him to sit for it – this was not feasible as his net paycheck (about R500) goes to the mother. The testing fee came to about RM500.

21 January 2010

Today was another milestone reached in the path towards getting Gnanam into college.

At about 4.00pm, Mr Loo (from YB Eli’s office), Sekaran and Gnanam were present at the Admissions Office at Brickfields Asia College to meet Mr. Baljeet Singh (Law Lecturer) and Mr. Aria Singham (Chief Operations Officer). The purpose of the meeting was to enable the college officials to meet Gnanam in person and to counsel him on the life he was going to experience in the college and the window of opportunities for furthering his education. Also the officials assessed the eligibility of Gnanam for study aid.

(Paul Wong a.k.a lucifer-butler with heart) joined in the discussion about ten minutes later.

It was a fruitful discussion. Gnanam is elated with the opportunity of study and the assistance he will received from the college. We (the NGIs) are equally appreciative of Mr Loo’s assistance (and YB Eli’s support) in giving Gnanam a sense of direction in life and we are happy for him. The college officials have been very helpful.

Sometime next week , Mr Loo will be registering Gnanam for part-time A-Levels and will on behalf of YB’s office, pay the tuition fees and Examination fees. The course commence in February 2010 and for a duration of 15 months. The tuition fees & examinations fees amounted to RM5,000.00 and RM1,400.00 respectively. The college officials have agreed to a further 50% reduction in tuition fees; therefore YB’s office will only need to make a disbursement of RM3,900.00 in total for the duration of the program.

19 January 2010

Mr Loo Chuan Boon ((Pembantu Khas ADUN Bukit Lanjan), Gnanam, Mr Sekaran, & Lucifer-Butler will be meeting up with the college counsellor at Brickfields Asia College on Thursday, 21/01/2010 at 3.30pm.

*****************

Today is 17 January 2010. Lucifer-Butler had a discussion with Mr Loo (Personal Assistant) at YB Elizabeth’s Wong office in Bandar Utama Community Centre.

YB Elizabeth has graciously committed to rendering study assistance for Gnanam to pursue his A-Levels at Brickfields Asia College on a part-time course. This is best solution currently for Gnanam as he still has to work to part-support his mother and siblings who currently resides in a low-cost flat in Taman Fardason, Off Jalan Kepong. His elder sister Theresa is working at TGV Cinema in Jaya Jusco shopping complex. Gnanam is curently working at a furniture retail outlet in Brem Mall, Kepong and we were given to understand that his boss supported the idea that he do part-time study as well. With a combined earnings of RM1,600.00 (estimate) to look after the family, there really isn’t much room for spare.

YB Elizabeth’s office has done a lot to help Gnanam and his family. It is hope that you readers can also chip in some money for Gnanam’s subsistence expenditures so that he can have a conducive environment for study. One can appreciate that it is very difficult to get out of the poverty trap, especially in their case. Mr Sekaran and Lucifer-Butler will continue to mentor Gnanam ( at the suggestion of Mr Loo) so that we make sure Gnanam stays on track. For the pre-university course, YB will be forking out at least RM6,400.00 for the A-Levels program. However an initial disbursement of RM1,400.00 soon, will put Gnanam into college this February. The remaining RM5,000 will come in in the subsequent disbursement to the college.

Sometime this week, Mr Loo, Lucifer-Butler and Gnanam will go to the college for a meeting with the student counsellor to assess Gnanam on the choice of subjects.

Please do get in touch with Paul Wong at 012-3799248 for more information on Gnanam. A small donation goes a long way towards helping Gnanam in his tertiary education.

Lucifer-Butler has arranged for a computer set for Gnanam for the purpose of using the internet resouce for A-Levels. We have to look into getting a telephone line for his apartment so that a streamyx line can be installed; alternative a wireless modem. All this cost money and the only way is if funds can come in so the mentors can channel the monies accordingly.

Gnanam seeks your assistance for educational opportunities.

Gnanam would like to pursue his A-Levels. I have done a simplified cashflow projection of the investment in Gnanam’s A-Levels one-year program with a local college.

YB Elizabeth Wong has kindly looked into procuring a studyloan/scholarship for Gnanam. He is sheduled for the January 2010 intake with a local college in Kuala Lumpur.

I would like to call on members of the public to assist in making some donations for this cause. Please feel free to contact me at +6012-3799248 or email to lucifer_butler@yahoo.com for more details.

Quite simply on behalf of some NGIs, we would like to help this boy for a better future. He has alot on his shoulder to handle. His PMR and SPM results provides a good indicator of his strive for excellence despite all the setbacks of his family life. A small gesture on our part could perhaps give him that chance for a new lease of life.

His stint in the welfare home was primarily due to the parents’ inability to take care of their siblings. Gnanam’s personal attributes/attitudes is vouchable.

Apparently, Gnanam’s mother informed Sekarn that Gnanaprakasam had a motorbike which was detained by the police when the later got arrested. She would have wanted to get the motorbike back but the police station personnel told her that the keys were missing. Till todate, they could not get the bike back.

Also the mother mentioned that when her husband was detained, he had informed the wife that he had with him some cash of about RM3,000 and had wanted to pass to his wife for contingency just in case they need to use money when he was not around. Apparently the cash was part of personal items parted from the detainee and kept under police custody and she could not have access to it. What became of the cash no one knows. Surely this cash would have come in handy to the family especially in hard times where the breadwinner was not around to fend for the family.
